What Consumers Need To Know About Maytag

Whirlpool Corporation, which is the world’s largest appliance manufacturer, issued a massive recall for 1.7 million dishwashers carrying the Maytag brand name on June 3, 2010. The reason for the recall given by the Consumer Product Safety Commission indicates the appliances contain a serious fire hazard. The problem with the dishwashers is there is a fault in the heating element which carries a risk of short-circuiting and erupting into a fire. All of the models affected contain plastic tubs inside the unit. After receiving reports of 12 fires associated with the dishwasher, the recall was issued. One of the fires reportedly caused serious damage, but fortunately no one was hurt in any of the incidents (BusinessWeek). According to an official press release issued by the company, the affected Maytag dishwashers were sold under several different brand names between February 2006 and April 2010, and prices ranged from $250-$900. The brand names included in the recall are: Maytag®, Amana®, Jenn-Air®, Admiral®, Magic Chef®, Performa by Maytag® and Crosley® (list courtesy of the Maytag website). Along with the recall comes a firm warning that consumers who own one of the affected dishwashers should immediately cease use of the appliance and disconnect the power source to the dishwasher. On the Consumer Product Safety Commission’s website, a reminder was posted “It is illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled consumer product.” Consumers who own dishwashers affected by the recall should contact Maytag at (800) 544-5513 or visit the company website for further instructions and information regarding affected models. The website also gives further information regarding dishwasher details and shows consumers where the model and serial numbers are located on each type of unit can be found. Maytag is offering to repair the appliances for no charge. However those consumers who prefer to purchase new dishwashers are eligible for a rebate of $150 or $250 towards a purchase of a new Maytag stainless steel tub model; reportedly there are seven choices to select from to use the rebate. This is the second recall issued by the company in the last three years for its dishwashers. Back in February 2007, a Maytag recall affecting 2.3 dishwashers after 135 fires occurred due to the fault in those models.
